Tiaki Wai water charges for Wellington landlords
From 1 July 2026, Tiaki Wai took over drinking water, wastewater and stormwater across Wellington, Porirua, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and the Wairarapa. If you own a rental in our patch, the name on the water bill may already have changed.
Who pays water is not automatic. It depends on the tenancy agreement, whether the property is separately metered, and whether the charge is for supply the tenant can control. A shared meter or a bill that mixes rates-style charges with usage needs a careful read before anyone is asked to pay it.
A short owner checklist
- Find out if the property is separately metered
- Read the current agreement before forwarding a bill
- Keep Tiaki Wai notices with the property file
- Ask us before deducting anything from a bond or sending a tenant an invoice
